Gender and the Refugee Crisis

Webinar:
Gender and the Refugee Crisis

Co-Sponsored with Ariadne--European Funders for Social Change and Human Rights

March 29, 2017
10:00-11:00 am EDT
3:00-4:00 GMT

Women’s migration is not a new phenomenon but it is increasing in Europe, with an estimated more than 1 million refugees and migrants coming to the EU in the past two years. The majority of these refugees and migrants have come from Syria and other countries experiencing social, political, and economic upheaval. Refugee and migrant women and girls seeking safety in Europe experience a lack of gender-specific support services and public resistance during their transit through the Balkans and countries neighboring the EU, and upon their arrival to EU countries and in the resettlement process.

This gap in attending to the specific needs of women and girls within the EU’s response to the migrant and refugee crisis has serious implications for women and girls’ human rights. This webinar, which builds on Ariadne and IHRFG's 2016 Funder Learning Visit to Jordan, will explore some of the responses given by women's rights organisations to these issues and look at some grantmaker strategies to address these.

Speakers:
  • Annie Hillar, Senior Programme Officer for Women's Funds, Mama Cash (moderator)
  • Maria Al Abdeh, Executive Director, Women Now
  • Marketa Hronkova, Director, La Strada Czech Republic
