Federal Policy Briefing in Washington, D.C.

FEDERAL POLICY BRIEFING 2011

Co-sponsored with the Peace and Security Funders Group
March 29-31, 2011
Washington, D.C., USA

Reflect on lessons learned since the 2010 mid-term elections.
Take stock of the forces shaping U.S. policies.
Explore mid-course adjustments to grantmaking in pursuit of peace, security and human rights.

The Briefing began with a networking dinner on Tuesday, March 29. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made a guest appearance.

Our full-day of meetings on Wednesday, March 30 opened with a keynote address by Deputy Secretary of State Jim Steinberg. Mr. Steinberg provided valuable insight at the dawn of the Obama presidency at our 2009 Federal Policy Briefing. Two years and one election later, much has changed; Mr. Steinberg reflected on the administration's current circumstances.

Our traditional, and enjoyable, NGO-funder evening reception at the Mott House rounded out the day on Wednesday with guest speaker Susan Eisenhower, President of the Eisenhower Group (and granddaughter of U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower).

Throughout the day-and-a-half conference on Wednesday and Thursday, we were briefed from and dialogued with senior-level policy-makers, preeminent analysts, and leading activists, including
  • Representative Jim McGovern (D-MA)
  • Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL)
  • Jameel Jaffer, Director, Center for Democracy, ACLU
  • Elisa Massimino, President and CEO, Human Rights First
  • Zainab Salbi, Founder and CEO, Women for Women International

on timely and relevant issues affecting human rights, peace and security, including

  • guarding human rights while confronting "violent extremism"
  • protecting the human rights of terrorism suspects in detention
  • promoting peace-building and military withdrawal
  • unpacking budget reform and national security
  • examining U.S. responses to popular uprisings in the Middle East
  • ensuring government accountability in national security and human rights policy-making
